At the Edge of the Water
To experience the Sacramento Valley wetlands on a misty winter afternoon is to enter a timeless place where water, land, and sky meet. Although their pristine condition may be gone forever, it’s still possible to sense traces of an earlier, primeval place. Here, amid the thunder of a thousand wings and bird cries, it is possible to feel a certain peace in an uncertain world.
For this series, I combined my photographs with encaustic, a hot-wax process, to emphasize the soft, tranquil atmosphere of these wildlife refuges. Historically, the three panel triptych form has been used for religious paintings. Here, it allows contemplation of different parts of the image without losing a sense of the whole.
