Veiled Flowers

For this project, I wanted to experiment with combining photographs with encaustic, a hot wax process. I’ve been working this way for a few years, but this time I wanted to do so intuitively, to see how these two distinctly different mediums could interact and influence the work. I started by photographing the flowers on my kitchen table and after further enhancing the image in editing software, I printed the photograph on paper, silk, or tissue. Then I applied encaustic medium to the print. The image informed how I would use the wax and what other elements to add, including collage materials, oil paint, and metallic powders. Creating texture and scratching lines also changed the surface. With all these techniques, I wanted to show that, even at their most intoxicating, flowers carry the hint of their own fading.
